CASE STUDY

The design requirement for this project was to propose a loft apartment which would be fully functional but at the same time capture the character and personal spirit of the artist for whom it was primarily intended.

Louise Bourgeois is well known as a controversial French-born American sculptor who received great recognition at a late age. The loft reflects not only her complicated temperament, but also her sensuality, painful mystery and inventiveness. The interior appearance gives off an eclectic impression where Industrial New York meets the French Art Nouveau movement, including vintage elements. The emphasis is placed on contrast of masculinity with rough hard materials, and soft biomorphic forms which symbolize femininity. A classical-modern staircase and a monumental spider web construction (that connects the entire loft) constitute the central piece.
